I have been a member of the BDÜ since 1991: Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators The Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators e. V. (BDÜ) is the largest German professional association for professional interpreters and translators with over 7,000 members. It thus represents a good 80 percent of all organized interpreters and translators in Germany. As an umbrella organization, the BDÜ-Bundesverband represents the 13 member associations affiliated to it. The member associations work at the state level or in professional groups, such as the "Verband der Konferenzdolmetscher e. V." (Association of Conference Interpreters). (VKD) in BDÜ. The office of BDÜ is located in Berlin.
Like other translators' and interpreters' associations, the BDÜ has the following objectives:
Disseminate information about translation and interpreting
Ensure training standards for interpreters and translators
Organize training courses for translators
Build networks for translators
(Potential) customers competently advised.
The work of professional associations is particularly important in this field, since the professional titles of "interpreter" and "translator" (at least in Germany and Austria) are not protected, so that the demand for certain training and quality standards is difficult to enforce. "Übersetzer.eu" is a service portal where the customer can quickly find a suitable translator for his or her text in the immediate vicinity. I have been a member since November 2019.
